Spring Fountain [Dec. 9th, 2012|07:16 pm]
Pop Surrealism, Underground, Lowbrow Art

danmavsv2r2
Hello, first time post. We hope you like it.

Shunga is a Japanese term for erotic art.  The literal translation is “picture of spring”—“spring” is used as a euphemism for sex.  Thangka is a Tibetan painting made out of silk & embroidery with images of the deity.  Thangka paintings served as teaching tools for meditative practices.  Practitioners used the thangka as a visual guide by visualizing themselves as the deity to internalize the Buddha qualities.

Through our cast of our evolving characters, Chaz (bear) and Buffy (rabbit), we explore provocative images of the past and compare the traditional to the contemporary as a means to contrast the historical passivity to the potency of the contemporary reincarnation.

The decorative thangka curtains, which frames our Shunga inspired imagery is a visual and physical metaphor of our learning process in this body of work.

GHOST RIDER'S OTHER BIKE IS IN THE SHOP! [Jan. 26th, 2012|04:00 pm]

[music |Guns N' Roses]

Last week I watched "Tales That Witness Madness", a quirky 1970's British horror flick in the vein of Tales From The Crypt & Vault of Horror. In one of the segments, a man finds an old Penny Farthing bike, y'know, one of those old-fashioned bicycles with one really big wheel and one small one in the rear? Well, when he gets on the bike, he is transported back in time and...well, that's not really important. There's one scene where the house that the Penny Farthing bike is in catches fire and engulfs the bike.
This got me to thinking of the Marvel Comics demon/superhero GHOST RIDER. I started to visualize The Ghost Rider on a burning Penny Farthing bike and this lead me to paint it all out the next morning-

Satisfied with the results, I posted it on my DeviantArt site- http://ragzdandelion.deviantart.com/ and low and behold, it became an instant hit!! I got tons of viewers and faves. At the time of this post, it has nearly 7000 viewers and over 800 faves, the biggest I've ever gotten for any artwork I've posted on DeviantArt since I joined it 6+ years ago. I felt like Jerry Lewis at one of his Telethons watching the numbers rise.
It's so crazy. I guess you never know what will "connect" with people and make it a hit.
All I can say is "THANK YOU" to all the people that took the time to comment and to fave this piece. It means alot to me!
Now I've got to come up with a cool frame for the artwork and make sure I take it with me to the conventions.
It made my week, that's for sure!

Down The Rabbit-Hole with Camille Rose Garcia [Feb. 16th, 2010|01:11 am]
Pop Surrealism, Underground, Lowbrow Art

andreaknoll

Growing up in the shadow of Disneyland, artist and illustrator Camille Rose Garcia spent a lot of time contemplating the reality of fantasy and the fantasies that make reality palatable.

Just as the white paint flaked and the wood decayed in the once-perfect picket-fenced suburbs that surround Disney's Orange County Fantasyland, on canvas and in print, Garcia's brightly colored fairytale tableaus are juxtaposed with darker elements, as real world forces impinge on her perfect dream worlds.

Much of Garcia's work explores the lie of the American Dream, the loss of it, and how the masses are self-medicating to deal with the aftermath. Though these themes are adult in nature, the on-the-surface beauty of Garcia's art appeals to a younger audience on a more basic level. So when Harper Collins decided to revisit Alice's Adventures in Wonderland amid renewed interest in Lewis Carroll's curious tale (which was first published in 1865), Garcia was a natural choice to re-imagine the visual element of the book.

Read this excellent, in-depth new interview with Camille Rose Garcia to find out what she saw when she followed Alice and a certain well-dressed (and late) White Rabbit down Carroll's most unusual rabbit-hole.
